Porn Classics Revisited – Naked Came the Stranger – VCA Pictures – 1975

This week we take you back forty seven long years ago to 1975. It was a decade of change. There was the disco rage for one and one other change that would have a major impact on the U.S., the world and how the entire world would communicate in the future. So let’s look back and see what 1975 was like and what took place in our world back then.

As always lets first look at the cost of living. The average income in the U.S. was a whopping $14,000. a year, the average rent was just $200 a month for an apartment. You could buy a brand new 3 bedroom home for an average price of just $40,000. When came to automobiles, the average price was around $4,200, but you could go expensive and buy a new Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale for $5,625. A gallon of gas was only 44 cents. You could get a Hershey chocolate bar for 15 cents and a Big Mac for only 70 cents. Men’s leisure suits were popular and cost only $39.00.As for news headlines and what was taking place here and around the world……..The Vietnam War ends as Communist forces take Saigon and South Vietnam surrenders unconditionally……..The US carries out the Vietnam “Operation Babylift” that brings Vietnamese orphans to the US…….Jimmy Hoffa ex teamsters boss disappears never to be seen again……..Patti Hearst becomes Most Wanted and then arrested for armed robbery………It is also in 1975 that two young men, Bill Gates and Paul Allen would create a new company called Microsoft……..New computers are starting to appear including the Altair 8800 and the battle for video recorder standards of VHS and Betamax begin.

In the world of entertainment among the year’s big films were  “Jaws”, “Young Frankenstein”, “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” and “The Godfather II”. In the music world LaBelle, the Eagles, Black Sabbath, Elton John, Paul McCartney and Wings  and Chicago are the big record sellers. On TV among the big shows were The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Waltons, All in the Family, M*A*S*H and Happy Days. We lost a number of celebrities in 1975 including blues performer T-Bone Walker, actress Susan Hayward, baseball manager Casey Stengel, TV writer and host Rod Serling and comedienne Moms Mabley.

In the world of porn, films are still being shot, for the most part, in New York, but some productions pop up on the west coast. New stars, new camera techniques all play into the growing popularity of porn. Despite protests from morality groups, government threats and new laws, the porn industry is creating a whole new entertainment niche for consenting adults. One of the films to come out in 1975, was a great film based on a best selling book, the film is titled, Naked Came The Stranger”.

Naked Came The Stranger – 1975 – VCA Pictures – Director – Radley Metzger – Cast – Darby Lloyd Rains, Mary Stuart, Helen Madigan, Levi Richards, Alan Marlow, others.

This truly a work of art from porn’s golden age. It is actually based on a best seller on the N.Y. Times list back in the day. How the best selling book came about is a story in itself. But the film adaptation immediately became a major porn hit.

Starring Darby Lloyd Rains in one of her best ever performances she not only was sexually appealing, but she also possessed fantastic acting chops and it made this exceptionally produced film even better. With Metzger (aka Henry Paris) at the helm his films always had somewhat of way of using the imagination as you watched the film unfold and that is what you have here, and brilliantly done.

In the film Darby and her husband play radio talk show hosts who discuss sex on the air with their listeners and callers. But away from the mic, hubby is having an affair. When Darby finds out, well what’s good for the goose is good for the gander, so she decides to have one of her own. This turns their lives both on and off the air into one frenetic round of sexual pleasure and excitement as they try to keep their own lives together. The sex scenes offer more than you might expect for the time. There is humor, there is pathos, there is wonderment that all blends together extremely well. The sex scenes are explosive, nothing held back and offer plenty of good stroke time for the viewer. Ms. Rains really gets into her sex scenes and her penchant for real sexual connections and feelings made her performances even better. Great performances all around, sexually and non sexually in this true classic from the golden age. In addition to all this the music track that accompanies this film is excellent and lends to the overall feel of the film

You can find it today completely remastered in HD and with a ton of great extras added such as how the restoration was done, the soft and hard cuts, deleted scenes, director’s commentary, trailers of other Metzger porn classics, a 40 page booklet that tells of the entire history and process of the film and a lot more. If you are looking for a great porn classic, this 5 star gem “Naked Came A Stranger” is a great place to start.

ART OF ADULT – Porn Classics Revisited – “The Story of Joanna” – AVC Films – 1975

This week we take you back forty four years to 1975. What do you remember from that year?  For me, my country music management and artist booking company, Warric Productions, was doing well in the New York-New Jersey area and Nashville. The adult industry and moving to Florida wasn’t even a tiny blip on my radar screen then.

As always we begin with the cost of living in 1975. The average income per year was just $14,500., the average cost of a new 3 bedroom home was around $39,300. You could buy a new Chevrolet Caprice for $4,800 or a Ford Mustang for $4,100. Gas was now a whopping 44 cents a gallon. A loaf of bread was 28 cents, a gallon of milk $1.05 and a record album was $3.99. It was a year when Pet Rocks made their debut and a new candy known as “Jelly Bellies” also made their debut. BIC introduces the disposable razor. The Laser Printer is introduced. Kodak is working on a new product, the digital camera. As for some of the news headlines…….Gerald Ford was President and signs a $2.3 billion loan to New York City to keep them from bankruptcy……..Bill Gates and Paul Allen start up a brand new company called Microsoft that would change the future of the entire world in the years ahead……..There was also the introduction of home video recorders and a battle brewing between VHS and Betamax……..Jimmy Hoffa, the ex teamsters boss disappears and never to be seen again……..Patti Hearst becomes one of America’s Most Wanted and arrested for armed robbery……..U.S. Apollo and Soviet Soyuz 9 spacecraft link up in space, Russian cosmonauts and American astronauts shake hands…….The Vietnam War ends as forces take Saigon and South Vietnam surrenders unconditionally.,,,,,,,The U.S. carries out Vietnam “Operation Babylift” bringing Vietnamese orphans to the U.S.

On the entertainment front among the big hit films in 1975 were Jaws, The Towering Inferno, One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Funny Lady and The Godfather II. In pop music the big names included Aerosmith, David Bowie, Chicago, Elton John, Black Sabbath, Bruce Springsteen and The Eagles. For TV watchers among the most popular shows were All in the Family, The Bionic Woman, Sanford and Son, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley. A brand new show made its debut on NBC, Saturday Night Live. Among the celebrities we lost in 1975 were actress Susan Hayward, baseball’s Casey Stengel, writer Rod Serling, comedienne Moms Mabley, Aristotle Onassis and musician T-Bone Walker.

In the world of porn most everything was being filmed all over the New York area. New technology for the time gave films more diversity with an overall better look in cinematography. 1975 produced several top porn films, such as the one we take a look back at today, “The Story of Joanna”.

The Story of Joanna – AVC Films –  Director – Gerard Damiano – Cast – Terri Hall, Juliet Graham, Jamie Gillis, Zebedy Colt, John Busch, Steven Lark, John Koven, Roy Carlton.

While the theme of this film revolves around S&M, it is a true love story, and one of the very best from porn’s golden age. Directed and written by Gerard Damiano who gave the world “Deep Throat” and “The Devil and Miss Jones”, this masterpiece gives Damiano three of the very best to come out of the early golden age. The story line is one that will keep you watching every little move, listen to every word, watch every second of the sex scenes and keep you totally mesmerized right until the very end.

The film centers on Jason (Jamie Gillis) a very wealthy, womanizer who gets what he wants. He meets a debutante, Joanna (Terri Hall) and convinces her to come and be his maid in his castle like home. She is reluctant but something tells her to go ahead and accept his offer. It doesn’t take long after she becomes his maid that she is beginning to fall in love with him. She also sees the other side of him and is subjected to his every sexual whim which she gives into because of her love for him, However Jason tells Joanna that no matter what he cannot, and will not, love her back. She is convinced that she can change him. He also wants her to have sex with others and she complies with his wishes. For some women this would be degradation, but for Joanna it is now a way of life, her love for him is too strong and she is convinced that she can, and will, change him.

The sex scenes in the film have a lot of S&M attached and Ms. Hall handles the role and the sexual scenes extremely well. Her looks and body are the perfect fit for the role of Joanna. There is some tenderness in the sex scenes but they are quickly overtaken by the S&M acts that are performed. There is also one beautifully filmed scene where Jason is being serviced orally by his man servant Griffin (Zebedy Colt). It is done and filmed in such a way that it doesn’t come off as a shocking gay scene at all. The scene where Joanna takes on three men is another that has the lust and love factor as she does it to prove her undying love for Jason. Sexually there is nothing she won’t subject herself to trying to prove her love for him is real even though he continues to tell her he will never return the favor of true love. As the film comes to the end there is a very surprising, and not expected, twist to this story that I will not divulge, that explains the entire reasons for Jason’s control of Joanna. It is extremely well done.

The cinematography and lighting are exceptional. The performances by Gillis and Hall are extremely realistic, the dialogue delivered convincingly. Ms. Hall, a former premier ballet dancer with the Stuttgart Ballet Company, handles her role as Joanna to perfection, while Gillis, who was one of porn’s best actors, turns in another masterful performance. The rest of the cast handle their brief roles well making the characters come to life. An excellent addition to the overall, film is the use of some great classical music pieces to highlight many scenes that add to the overall eroticism.

This is available on DVD and still looks terrific for a film done more than forty years ago. I definitely recommend “The Story of Joanna” an exceptional piece of adult film making and a true classic from porn’s golden age.

THE ART OF ADULT – The Porn Classics Revisited – “3 a.m. The Time of Sexuality” – 1975

In the world of porn, New York is still a hub for porn films, but some productions pop up on the west coast. Despite protests from morality groups, government threats and new laws, the porn industry is creating a whole new entertainment niche for consenting adults. One of the films to come out in 1975 was a truly remarkable, mainstream style film that we look back at today, “3 a.m. the Time of Sexuality”.

3 a.m. Time of Sexuality – Westwood Films/Cal Vista Classics – Director – Robert McCallum – Cast – Georgina Spelvin, Judith Hamilton, Sharon Thorpe, Clair Dia, Rhonda Gallard, Robert Rose. Charles Hooper, Frank Mauro.

When early porn classics are discussed, for some reason this one is generally left out and shouldn’t be. It is an extremely well made film with the feel of an Ingmar Bergmann art film. It has the shadings, nuances and combination of story, plot and music.  The characters are very well portrayed by the actors under McCallum’s well paced direction. It is truly a hidden gem among the classics from porn’s golden age. The story revolves around a middle class family and the beachfront house they live in on Long Island. It’s a family where Mark (Frank Mauro) and Elaine (Rhonda Gallard)  are married with two teenage children, Stacy (Clair Dia) and Ronnie (Charles Hooper).  Kate (Georgina Spelvin) is the spinster sister of Rhonda who has been carrying on an illicit affair with Mark for some time. He finally decides he wants to find himself and make things work with his wife and end the affair. When he tells Kate this, she accidentally kills him in a boating accident getting knocked overboard and drowning. The title of the film is derived from the time this accident occurred.

After his death, Elaine has a sexual tryst with Morgan (Rob Rose), who is a local tennis pro. Stacy and Ronnie are becoming sexually active and are attracted to each other but nothing really happens at this point. It seems Ronnie has been peeking in on a neighbor, Vicki (Sharon Thorpe), a widow who loves to masturbate. She finally spots him and gives him his first taste of real sex. In the meantime Kate has taken it upon herself to take the virginity away from Stacy in a steamy scene. There’s a lot more that takes place in this dramatic story that will keep your interest level high. As the story nears the end Kate confesses into a tape recorder what really happened to Mark. Then in true art film form, she walks out onto the beach and into the waters of Long Island Sound in a very chilling ending.

The cinematography, angles, shadings, lighting are all extraordinary and capture every essence of this story. The acting is far superior from what one might expect in a porn film. Ms. Spelvin’s Broadway background shows with her excellent acting chops that bring her character to life. The rest of the cast are also extremely convincing in their roles as they all obviously had some serious training as actors. As for the sex scenes, most of them are short, to the point and some score more heat than others, but overall well done. This film, now 45 years later, still holds up as a true mainstream style production in just about every way. It has been transferred to DVD. Give “3 a.m. The Time of Sexuality” a look, you will not be disappointed with this hidden gem enjoying another superb portrayal by AVN and XRCO Hall of Famer Georgina Spelvin.
