Interview: Tsubasa Mai
IV (Interviewer): You made an unusual debut, kicking off your career as a gravure artist to come to hair nude and then to porn.
Mai: I have many dreams of my own, such as becoming famous. It’s not easy, but I thought this would be the quickest way to let a lot of people know about me.
IV: It wasn’t that there was an actress you liked, or that you longed for the world of porn.
Mai: Hmm. I didn’t know that much about it, and I only knew famous people. When I was asked to be on the cover of a magazine, I knew that the direction I wanted to go was “to become world-famous.” I don’t know which is right or wrong. I thought that this would be more meaningful to me than a magazine cover.
IV: You said that what meant something important to you was porn.
Mai: Yes, I did. I thought it would lead me to what I wanted to do and what I was aiming for. I felt that there was no reason not to do it, right?
IV: First of all, you have a goal of becoming famous, and you think porn is a shortcut to that goal.
Mai: Yes, JAV is seen by people from overseas, especially from Asia.
IV: So, we are looking at the Pacific Rim.
Mai: Yes. I’m also studying English.
IV: Oh, wow. You’re serious?
Mai: Yes, I am. I’d really like to travel abroad. I also really like world heritage sites. But I can’t speak English (laughs).
IV: Then you’re in a situation where you can’t travel abroad right now, and that’s pretty boring.
Mai: It’s so mushy!
Hobby? Skill? Hula-hooping.
IV: Do you like world heritage sites, or have you been to many of them?
Mai: Thailand and Vietnam. I like ruins in Asia.
IV: Did you go to Angkor Wat?
Mai: I went. It was very good.
IV: Where have you been in Thailand? There’s a lot of good food, isn’t there?
Mai: I did a lot of wandering around Thailand, and even went to Bangkok. The food was delicious, but rather than the crazy expensive stuff, I enjoyed the food from the street stalls while getting my hands all sticky.
IV: Besides traveling, do you have any other hobbies or special skills?
Mai: Hula hoops.

IV: Oh. Oh, by the way, you’ve been promoting it on social media as well.
Mai: When I was in high school, I started spinning a hula hoop every day as a way to lose weight.
Beautiful but Childish
IV: On the package, it says, “Beautiful but childish, childish but sexy in sex. What do you consider to be “childish” about yourself? When I talk to you like this, I get the impression that you are a very intelligent person.
Mai: “I like what I like. I don’t like what I don’t like, and I won’t do it.” So I’ve only ever chosen things I like. I think that’s very childish of me.
IV: Go ahead and have fun.
Mai: I’ve really been ignoring the bad stuff.
IV: (laughs) You’ve been living honestly with yourself, haven’t you?
Mai: That’s right, yes. That’s the part of me that thinks, “I’m still a c***d.”
IV: What are some of the childish aspects of your debut novel?
Mai: When I went to Yokohama Chinatown, there was a lot of food there. I love good food, and I love to eat. You can see me eating a steamed meat bun here. I really didn’t want to let go of it until the end, but I had to film afterward, so I reluctantly gave it to the staff.
IV: “Reluctantly.” (laughs)
Mai: I wanted to finish it. I really could only eat a little bit.
IV: When you say that you chose only what you liked, were your club activities and studies like that?
Mai: I was in the homecoming club. I spent most of my time playing with my friends. I would finish cleaning quickly and then go home with my friends and play. All the time.
IV: What do high school students do to play in the city?
Mai: We would take Purikura photos (photo booths) and then go to a café or a fast-food restaurant, as it was then, and chat. I’d say bad things about the teacher.
IV: Wa-ha-ha! Girls, you like to talk, don’t you?
Mai: That’s what I did all day after school. I couldn’t stop, could I?
The Only Girl in a Mini-Skirt to Show Her Legs
IV: I know you are from Kobe, but I think Kobe is associated with “young ladies.”
Mai: I was a s*****t, so when it came to having fun every day, I didn’t ask my parents for pocket money. I was more interested in how to have fun without spending a lot of money.
IV: Oh, by the way, high s**********s in Kobe make their skirts longer, don’t they? How about you, Mai?
Mai: I kept it short. Everyone makes it longer, though. It’s like putting an elastic band around your waist without zipping it up properly and then shifting it. IV: Did you shorten your skirt by yourself in such a situation?
Mai: I definitely didn’t want to be long. I was under the impression that I had to show my legs. I folded my skirt at the waist. But it was painful (laughs).
IV: If only one of you is showing your bare legs, you’ll stand out, won’t you?
Mai: I stood out. In a good way. “Isn’t that girl’s skirt short?” That’s what my seniors used to say to me. But I made a face like, “No, they didn’t say that,” and looked in a completely different direction. (laughs)
IV: Do you have a strong heart or a strong competitive spirit?
Mai: I don’t want to lose, yes.
First Facial, and squirt, were Memorable
IV: You’re going into the battlefield of adult films with that competitive spirit. Do you have any enthusiasm?
Mai: Now that I’m in the competition, I want to be the best.
IV: So cool! Do you have any memories of your debut novel?

IV: How do you feel about having sex with a porn actor for the first time?
Mai: At first, I had a scary image. I had an image of a muscle-bound, bouncy guy. But he was so gentle and professional. I was able to do it without worry.

Mai: That’s right. I was really embarrassed about that. All that embarrassment turned into nervousness. I wondered what kind of face I was making, and in my field of vision, there were only glimpses of the actors, the cameraman, the sound guy, and the staff. But when I realized that behind the wall, the elite people were also watching!
IV: Be aware that they’re watching you on the monitor in the next room!
Mai: There are more people watching right here, right now, at this very moment! There are more people watching in the next room! I got really nervous and it was really hard. I’m afraid to watch that first undressing scene because I’m afraid I’ll remember it (laughs).
IV: Is that different from taking off your clothes for a photo shoot?
Mai: Photos and videos are completely different. Even your slightest movement is captured in the video. A photo is the same in the sense that it’s recorded, but it’s just a moment because you’re like, “Smile!” It was totally different from the video, so I was much more nervous about the video.
IV: It’s the same as being naked in front of the lens, but it’s completely different. I think we’ll see more and more of that kind of shooting in the future.
Mai: That’s right. I think I’ll get used to it in a good way, though I don’t know yet (laughs).
