R18’s Roku Removal

R18.com

Beginning February 23rd, 2022Roku will no longer be supporting non-certified (Private) channels, such as R18.com, any longer. Roku users who may have also used the platform to stream porn-related content will be left to seek other avenues. The backbone for this sudden change includes a new channel coding/testing program (Independent Developer Kit) Roku initiated back in October 2021. Another issue Roku is looking to squander is persistent eyes on them for ignoring the hidden pornographic side of their streaming platform.

Roku’s “Independent Developer Kit” is something they go into extensively on their developer blog. The purpose of this is for Roku to broaden its innovation for becoming a stronger streaming platform. In doing so, they will enable creators to use their new IDK (Independent Developer Kit) and coding language to make games and apps. These new channels through the IDK/coding program will be renamed to “Beta” channels. Beta channels enable creators to test their new channels with up to 20 testers. This new direction Roku is looking to take their streaming platform is the cause for them dropping “non-certified” channels.

A non-certified channel (NCC) is a channel created by an independent person/company. R18 fell into that category because we created our own app, which was NSFW/Pornographic, to be used within the Roku streaming service. These NCCs, also known as “Private” channels, were only obtainable in other ways such as a “link” code which is what you needed to connect your R18 account to your Roku device. We were not a public channel.

So, why can’t R18.com become a proper public channel like Netflix and Disney+? R18.com provides high-quality JAV movies (porn) to its fanbase/supporters. Pornography, which some private channels were, is against Roku’s restrictions (Terms of Service) placed on public channels. Pornography related content was able to survive within the NCC section of Roku for so long because they turned a blind eye to it. This fact is what has had Roku in the spotlight. While these “private” porn-related channels weren’t necessarily harming anyone, it caused nervousness with people looking to support the streaming platform financially.

If you’re looking for more ways to enjoy R18.com content on your TV, we have some you may enjoy.

Apple Airplay & HomeKit

There are two other options for still using your Roku device to enjoy premium JAV content through R18. Roku does support the use of Apple Airplay and HomeKit. As you might expect, Airplay and HomeKit will be compatible with your iPhone, iPad, and Apple computer. You will be able to seamlessly stream anything you’re watching or looking at from your device to your Roku connected to the TV.

Screen-Mirroring

The second option involves “screen mirroring.” This option is more for android and PC users. Both of those devices have an option known as “screen mirroring.” This displays exactly what’s on your phone, ratio too, from your phone/computer to the TV screen. Setting your videos or JAV movies into full-screen mode should fill up the screen quite well, too.

HDMI Cable

One final option for watching R18 movies is to use an HDMI cable on your Apple laptop (Macbook) or PC laptop. For Apple laptops, you’ll need an HDMI cable that has an HDMI connector and a Lightning port connector (this end goes into your laptop – ensure this is correct). For PC users, you’ll need to determine which your laptop has and then find the appropriate cable to suit both your TV and laptop’s needs.
