Interview: Nana Yagi
IV (Interviewer): This is the second anniversary of the project, and I’d like to do an interview with you. Congratulations!
Yagi: Thank you very much.
IV: How do you feel about celebrating your second anniversary?
Yagi: I’ve been looking back over the past two years a lot lately, including this interview. What can I say? Surprise comes before the feeling of joy.
IV: Is it a surprise?
Yagi: When I made my debut, I didn’t think I would be able to continue like that.
IV: Did you expect to quit right away?
Yagi: It’s not like that, but I never imagined that I would be allowed to do so many things like this.
IV: I see. So you’ve been through a lot and are now in your third year.
Yagi: I think the third year will be a year of big changes.
IV: Does that mean that you are changing as an actress?
Yagi: That’s part of it, and first of all, I won’t be a newcomer anymore. I think I’m going to become someone who is expected to deliver quality…
IV: I see. You used the word “change,” but has anything changed since your debut?
Yagi: There are so many! It’s hard to put into words, but a lot. But I wonder if there are things that I haven’t been able to change.
IV: When you say you haven’t changed, do you mean in a bad way?
Yagi: Yes, I do. I have a strong ability to try to keep myself calm, and that can get in the way of my work. When I act calm, it sometimes makes me look like I’m cutting corners as a porn star.
IV: I see. So there are things that are necessary for a human being but can be a hindrance for a porn star.
Yagi: Also, I’m not very good at switching between work and vacation. I tend to think that if I have time to play, there must be something I can do.
IV: You’re so stoic…
Yagi: That’s not even true (laughs). But I do look back on it at home by myself.
IV: Have you seen any of your work?
Yagi: I don’t really watch the films. I read and reread the notes I’ve made in the script I keep on site.
IV: What kind of things do you take note of in the field?
Yagi: It’s a feeling. It’s not about the lines, it’s about how I’m going to act while thinking like this.
IV: That’s great! Did someone advise you to do that?
Yagi: I think and do things on my own. I also keep a notebook at home where I summarize what was said, advice, and points for reflection. This is the twelfth notebook I’ve kept.
IV: 12 books in 2 years? That’s amazing! Do you sometimes reread your previous notebooks?
Yagi: It’s totally there. I’m the type of person who thinks too much, so I put it all together.
IV: That’s great.
Yagi: I guess so. Thinking too much is one of my good qualities, but it’s also one of my bad qualities…
IV: No, but you’re also trying to change the way you think about work… what?
Yagi: (Tears in eyes) I’m sorry. I feel like I’m crying…
IV: Oh, no! Surprise!
Yagi: I was reminiscing about all the things I’ve done, and I got really emotional.
IV: Oh, I see. That’s right… So, shall we change the mood and talk about Christmas memory episodes? (laughs)
Yagi: I’m fine (laughs).
IV: That’s how many things have happened in the past two years. So tell me again about the first year when you were writing the first notebook!
Yagi: Nowadays, there are more dramas, but back then, there were very few, and when there were, they only had a few settings.
IV: I talked to the producer in charge of the project, and he said that they avoided dramas because they wanted to be honest about their pleasure.
Yagi: I’m glad you were thinking about that. I’m glad.

IV: I guess you are stoic after all (laughs). If you were to recommend Yagi-san’s works to someone who hasn’t seen them yet, which ones would you recommend?
Yagi: I always want people to see my latest work!
IV: Cool! I guess that means you keep updating your greatest hits!
Yagi: I don’t know if it’s that cool (laughs), but Twitter allows you to display posts in a fixed format, right? I definitely want to use it to promote my latest work. That’s what I want to do no matter what kind of work I do in the future. That’s the only thing I want to stick to.

IV: If the director says to you, “Please improvise here,” can you blame yourself?

Yagi: When I thought about whether the line was right here, I missed the timing.
